Covers gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process to weld carbon steel pipes in advanced positions.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Function safely in a welding shop and a shipyard environment.
  2. Interpret blueprints to lay out, prepare, and assemble pipe coupons.
  3. Use GTAW equipment according to industry-standard codes.
  4. Weld full penetration butt joints on carbon steel pipes using GTAW in advanced positions according to industry-standard codes.
  5. Assess weld quality through the application of visual examination principles and practices in accordance with industry-standard codes.

Course Activities and Design

Each concept will be delivered via a combination of lectures and videos followed by practical demonstrations and hands-on application in the welding lab.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Oral or written examinations, quizzes, written assignments, visual inspection, welding tests and task performance.
