Course Description

Develops knowledge and manipulative skills required to weld mild steel pipe in all positions using the G.T.A.W. process. Department permission required. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This is an outcome based course utilizing a lecture/lab format.  This course includes classroom discussions, video tapes, and lab demonstrations covering technical skills. Course outcomes will include;  theoretical concepts, layout, fabrication, welding, oxyfuel cutting, safety, environmental awareness, communication, computations and human relations.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Function safely in the PCC Welding Lab
  • Demonstrate professional work ethics (habits).
  • Apply related math and science concepts
  • Interpret drawings and symbols, accurately layout a project, prepare and assemble projects to specified tolerances.
  • Weld open root groove joints on 3/8 mild steel plates in the horizontal, vertical and overhead positions in accordance with ASME Section IX.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The student will be assessed on his/her ability to demonstrate the development of course outcomes. The methods of assessment may include one or more of the following: oral or written examinations, quizzes, written assignments, visual inspection techniques, welding tests, safe work habits, task performance, and work relations.

Function safely in the PCC Welding Lab.

  • Students will understand and practice personal safety by using proper protective gear.
  • Students will understand and practice hand and power tool safety.
  • Students will understand and practice equipment safety.
  • Students will understand and maintain a safe work area.
  • Maintain a clean and clutterfree floor
  • Recognize and report dangerous electrical and air/gas hose connections
  • Understand and practice fire prevention
  • Access and explain the importance of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

Apply related math and science concepts

  • Explain calculating of joint preparation tolerances
  • Explain the benefits and characteristics of Low-Hydrogen electrodes for Welding of Steel Pipe
  • Identify the composition of the ER70S-6 Filler Metal for GTAW

Interpret drawings and symbols to accurately layout , prepare and assemble weld joints. 

  • Interpret lines, symbols and verbiage on project drawings
  • Prepare and layout material per specification
  • Assemble weld project per specification.
  • Discuss agencies governing pipe
  • Discuss the general acceptance criteria of welded pipe
  • Recognize pipe sizes and schedules
  • Identify pipe welding positions
  • Discuss advantages of GTAW of pipe
  • Prepare 6 inch diameter pipe using the oxy-acetylene pipe beveler

Weld open root groove joints on plate in the horizontal, vertical and over head positions. Weld 6 inch schedule 40 pipe in the horizontal position. 

Introduction to GTAW pipe

Pipe welding practice

  • Assemble and weld 6 inch pipe in the 2G position using GTAW and S.M.A.W. processes.
  • Demonstrate correct welding techniques
  • Follow welding procedure
  • Demonstrate visual examination principles in accordance with ASME Section IX.
