Course Description

Covers fabrication and welding of maritime joint assemblies. Introduces assembly aides. Incorporates hand tool usage with gas shielded flux cored arc welding (FCAW-G).

Addendum to Course Description

This is an outcome based course utilizing a lecture/lab format. This course includes classroom discussions, videos and lab demonstrations of technical skills.  Course outcomes will include: safety, theoretical concepts, layout, fabrication, oxy-fuel cutting, carbon arc gouging and flux cored arc welding.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Function safely in a welding shop and a shipyard environment.
  2. Use hand tools to lay out welding assemblies.
  3. Fabricate maritime joint assemblies.
  4. Weld maritime-specific joint assemblies with FCAW-G.

Course Activities and Design

This will be the first course in the Maritime Ship Fitting Welding sequence.  Each concept will be delivered in a combination of lectures and videos followed by practical demonstrations and hands-on application in the welding lab.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The student will be assessed on their ability to demonstrate the development of course outcomes. The methods of assessment may include one or more of the following: oral or written examinations, quizzes, written assignments, visual inspection and welding tests.
