Course Description

Provides clinical education experience in an affiliated hospital radiology department under the supervision of a registered radiographer and radiologist. Includes application of equipment manipulation and operation, radiological imaging procedures, radiation protection, medicolegal and ethical protocol, recordkeeping and patient care. Requires clinical competencies, objectives, performance assessment and attendance. Department permission required.

Addendum to Course Description

The student will learn the necessary skills that are required to function in the clinical area as a Radiologic Technologist and will demonstrate proper work ethic. This course is designed as Introductory Level I.
Radiography Clinic II (RAD 120) is required as part of the Radiologic Technology degree program. It is also a prerequisite for taking the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists examination for certification in Radiography. Transferability of credit depends entirely upon the institution to which the student wishes to transfer. Prior to enrolling in this course the student must be accepted in the Radiography Program and have successfully completed the required prerequisite courses.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  1. Demonstrate fundamental skills in performing routine radiography, patient care and radiation protection.
  2. Participate as a team member in the workflow of the radiography department.

Course Activities and Design

Level I INTRODUCTORY:
The student will be required to gather information and formulate skills by observing and assisting the radiographer in radiologic examinations/ procedures, patient care, radiation protection, equipment manipulation, and infection control.
At the completion of RAD 120, the student must be able to progress to Level 2 in the Clinical Levels of Progression. This is required for enrollment into RAD 130.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Complete a minimum number of diagnostic examinations in the clinic that correlate with RAD 101-102.
  2. Complete (2) clinical rotations, successfully.
  3. Complete the exercises in the clinical syllabus, the room objectives and film critiques, successfully.

The student will demonstrate understanding of the themes, issues, concepts, and development of the following skills:

Sterile Technique
Communication Strategies
Exposure Control Devices
Room and Mobile Fluoroscopy
Radiographic Grids
Radiographic Generator Controls
Radiographic Tube
Personnel Monitoring
Competencies or Process Skills:

  1. Prepare and operate tomographic equipment.
  2. Prepare medications and assist with administration.
  3. Locate the department’s emergency drug box and describe its contents.
  4. Practice proper sterile technique.
  5. Use effective communication strategies with all types of patients and healthcare personnel.
  6. Identify various components on fluoroscopy equipment and review documentation addressing fluoroscopic procedure protocols, equipment exposure rates, and dose limiting activities.
  7. Set automated and manual exposure controls.
  8. Select and use grids, correctly.
  9. Locate and describe the function of the various X-ray console controls.
  10. Locate anode and cathode end of x-ray tube.
