Course Description
Identifies and analyzes arguments by discerning simple logical patterns of argument, extracting arguments from the contexts in which they occur, restating them in clear and concise terms and clearing away needless language in formulating arguments. Illustrates common reasoning errors involving fallacies and provides logical alternatives. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
Prerequisities: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Students completing this course should be able to:
- Distinguish premises from conclusions in arguments in order to critically assess readings from diverse sources.
- Recognize the point of view of the author in order to communicate effectively with others who might have a different opinion from one’s own.
- Write clear, sympathetic paraphrases of arguments from actual discourse in order to clarify assumptions that people make when proposing conclusions.
- Analyze passages involving complex arguments, multiple arguments and counter arguments in order to understand the complexities within conversations one has with others.
- Write coherent, clear arguments and counterarguments in order to effectively communicate one’s own point of view when engaging in conversations with others.
Integrative Learning
Students completing an associate degree at Portland Community College will be able to reflect on one’s work or competencies to make connections between course content and lived experience.
Course Activities and Design
The course will be conducted in both the standard classroom and distance learning settings. It will involve lectures, discussions, and many short quizzes.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Grades will be based on regular quizzes, homework, and other written material. Any other requirements will be discussed the first week of classes.
