Course Description

Explores fitness instruction and leadership in the field of aquatics. Incorporates principles of hydrodynamics and exercise to achieve total fitness. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  1. Design and implement fitness assessments and aquatic exercise programming based on scientific foundations and aquatic safety protocols.
  2. Apply effective teaching strategies in aquatic fitness instruction.
  3. Apply motivational strategies to promote participation in aquatic fitness.
  4. Explore current trends and employment opportunities for aquatic fitness instruction.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  1. Explore and recognize aquatic certification and employment opportunities.

  2. Apply target heart rate and RPE in an aquatics environment

  3. Articulate exercise physiology (cardiovascular response, thermoregulation, special populations) and hydrodynamics in aquatic instructional settings. 

  4. Address industry safety issues, standards, legal/liability issues (special populations/pool environment)

  5. Implement aquatic exercise lesson plans and teaching demonstrations.

  6. Identify the benefits of water exercise.

  7. Utilize aquatic teaching styles, methods, and class program and content

  8. Apply the principles of fitness including warm-up, cool down, stretching, training modes, intensity, etc.

  9. AEA and industry standards for aquatic programming, music and equipment selection, and implementation.
