Course Description

Progressive continuation of the fundamental techniques employed in the art of Aikido. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Student provides appropriate sport clothing for activity. A gi (uniform) is recommended.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Improve overall body conditioning
  2. Improve strength, coordination, speed, power, balance, and focus
  3. Advance student's growth and conditioning toward lifelong fitness
  4. Develop knowledge and skills in Aikido
  5. Recognize and apply benefits of Aikido
  6. Improve whole body agility and correct alignment
  7. Develop kinesthetic awareness

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

SUBJECT MATTER: CONCEPTS, THEMES, ISSUES (TOPICAL AREAS)
 

  1. Warm-ups and cool-downs
  2. Conditioning, stretching, and endurance exercises
  3. Body mechanics and alignment development
  4. Discuss differences between Aikido, Judo, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, etc.
  5. Kihon (basics) rolling, footwork, timing, and distance
  6. Basic throws from variety of attacks
  7. Safety concerns
  8. History of Aikido
  9. Etiquette, terminology, and discipline


COMPETENCIES/SKILLS:

  1. Practice warm-up and cool-downs
  2. Develop whole body conditioning, strength, and endurance
  3. Select appropriate conditioning, stretching, and endurance exercises
  4. Demonstrate Aikido techniques
  5. Utilize proper tumbling, striking, and blending techniques
  6. Show proper etiquette and discipline
  7. Understand appropriate terminology
