Course Description

Provides an introduction to the basic concepts and theories of music perception and cognition. Examines the sensory, perceptual, and cognitive foundations of listening, performing, and composing. Explores the relationship between acoustic phenomena and perceptual understanding through the lens of pitch, timbre, acoustic space, temporal cycles and proportions, harmony, melody, rhythm, etc. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course introduces students to a sophisticated and abstract topic. However, the course is not intended just for students with a diverse background in Music and/or Technology. The intent is that students will be provided an introduction to a wide subject area that they can explore more specifically according to their interests and apply in the final project.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1. Define and explain key concepts and theories of music perception and cognition.

2. Describe the relationships between acoustic and cognitive processes involved in music perception, e.g., rhythm, melody, harmony, and timbre.

3. Explain the mechanisms of musical memory and recognition.

4. Describe how emotional responses to music relate to cognitive processes.

5. Identify and describe cross-cultural differences in music perception and cognition.

6. Discuss the relationship between music and the brain, and understand how humans process sonic stimuli.

Integrative Learning

Students completing an associate degree at Portland Community College will be able to reflect on one’s work or competencies to make connections between course content and lived experience.

General education philosophy statement

MUS 292: Introduction to Music Perception and Cognition supports the General Education mission of Portland Community College by helping students explore how humans perceive, interpret, and create music through the combined lenses of artistic practice, cultural context, and scientific inquiry. The course examines the relationship between acoustic phenomena and human perception, encouraging students to develop an understanding of their sensory and cognitive interaction with sound and their broader technological and natural environments (Philosophy C).

Through listening exercises, discussions, and analytical activities, students learn to conceptually organize auditory experience and understand how musical structures such as pitch, rhythm, timbre, and harmony shape perception and meaning (Philosophy E). Students engage with qualitative reasoning about sound and musical structure while exploring how perceptual and cognitive processes influence musical understanding (Philosophy D).

The course also promotes appreciation for aesthetic and artistic values by examining how musical works create expressive and emotional meaning through perceptual processes (Philosophy F). In addition, students consider how cultural background, historical context, and listening traditions shape the way music is experienced and interpreted, fostering an awareness of relationships between cultures and artistic practices (Philosophy A and B).

Through a final project and reflective essay, students connect course concepts to their own experiences with music and listening. This process encourages students to reflect on the role of music in their personal lives, communities, and broader cultural environments, supporting the development of thoughtful, reflective participants in society.

Aspirational Goals

Students are empowered to approach ideas regarding Music and its relation to Physics, Acoustics, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Biology, and Technology.

While given broad exposure to the course topics, specific ideas may be more relevant to each students' creative and academic goals.

Exposure to these topics will open up other possibilities for academic and career pursuits.
