Course Description

Focuses on the foundational skills and concepts needed to be persistent in MTH 105Z (Math in Society). Provides instruction in arithmetic, problem solving, technology, and academic skills in an interactive setting. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Solve mathematical problems that assist with MTH 105Z concepts and techniques.
  2. Implement strategies, including reflection, for personal progress over time in MTH 105Z.
  3. Develop and follow a personalized study plan for MTH 105Z that includes specific learning strategies (e.g., time management, active note-taking, participation in study groups) to enhance persistence and academic success.

Course Activities and Design

MTH 105Q is explicitly concurrent with MTH 105Z and exists to review, rehearse, and scaffold the foundational skills students need to succeed in MTH 105Z. Such activities include:

  1. Study skills workshops and discussions

  2. In-class exercises for mathematical processes related to MTH 105Z content

  3. Just in time lecture content for MTH 105Z review topics

  4. Group/peer work: problem-solving workshops

All activities assume students learn definitions and procedures by investigating practical problems that arise from MTH 105Z topics. Instruction prioritizes study skills, active practice, problem solving, group work, and immediate feedback.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Individual and group assessments may include:

  • portfolios

  • written reflections

  • in-class assignments and participation

  • group work

  • practice assignments

  • revisions

  • time management analysis

  • discussions
