Course Description

Explores the different roles, skill sets, and artistry associated with production of film and digital media. Covers fundamentals of pre-production planning, design principles, basic set builds, set decoration, introductory prop fabrication, costuming, and special effects. Includes an overview of video productions Art Department's structure and hierarchy, production terminology, and evaluation of industry etiquette. Recommended: MM 260. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Identify individual skill sets and roles of personnel in a video production Art Department.
  • Create style guides that incorporate color theory, design fundamentals, and industry vocabulary to explain the look and feel of a production.
  • Use common tools, artist techniques, and processes necessary to meet film and digital media industry standards.

Course Activities and Design

The material in this course will be presented in a classroom lecture/discussion/demonstration format, and in class hands-on exercises.There will be short assignments weekly, which may be partially completed in-class.Also, a longer assignment, which demonstrates techniques and skills, developed in the course.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Projects will be the major criteria for evaluation. Emphasis will be placed on creativity, presentations, meeting assigned deadlines, and participation in critiques. Additional methods of assessment may include quizzes, exercises, assignments, and attendance.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Student will work together in different roles to produce production treatments for film and digital media. Including sets, set dressing, props, costuming and special effects
