Explores the trends and current uses for immersive and motion-tracking technology for use with VR & AR experiences. Examines common implementations, design trends, and industry standard software used in VR/AR content creation. Includes the creation of simple projects in Unreal Engine 4 and augmentation of template projects that explore development concepts.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Design, create and integrate audio, visual, and interactive elements into a comprehensive immersive experience using Unreal Engine 4.

  • Prepare and customize content for successful delivery across multiple platforms, including PC, mobile devices and head mounted displays.

  • Evaluate current trends of VR and AR media delivery to propose options to potential clients, and discuss the benefits, challenges and misconceptions involved with working in AR and VR.

  • Identify and implement different types of locomotion principles.

  • Evaluate various interaction schemes common to AR/VR experiences.

  • Use immersive effects of visual and audio assets to a AR/VR experience and evaluate implementation methods.

Course Activities and Design

Course material will be presented in a lecture format. This course is designed to maximize learning through the use of strategies such as outcome based instruction", collaborative learning, contextual application and performance based assessment. Lecture material will consist of discussion, diagrams, multimedia," and other educationally sound practices. Other activities will include hands-on utilization of web production software. Demonstration and handout materials will be provided.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Projects will be the major criteria for evaluation. Emphasis will be placed on effective use of software to create and deploy projects using assigned techniques.
