Course Description

Supervised and educationally directed internship. Weekly lectures relate on-the-job experiences with academic program. A "C" grade or better is required in all prerequisites. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Students who are about to graduate work in an off-campus site in the interior design field for 90 hours during the term in addition to a 1 hour per week seminar class. This class is required for the Associate of Applied Science degree in Interior Design.

Intended Outcomes for the course

On completion of this course the student should be able to:
 

  1. Understand the process of conducting a job search
  2. Demonstrate how to write effective goals and develop specific measurable objectives to meet those goals
  3. Develop an effective resume and portfolio specifically focused on the interior design field
  4. Describe the relationship of course work to the real world of design practice
  5. Understand the reality of the designer’s daily work situation and observe the application of critical thinking, time management, and design skills in solving client design problems and working in a business environment
     

Course Activities and Design

This course will be presented in 2 formats:
 

  1. a weekly seminar in which students will develop skills in writing effective resumes, creating useful portfolios, and gaining an understanding of the work environments of different kinds of interior design establishments through the sharing of experiences; and
  2. the completion of a specified number of hours working in the design field in an establishment of the student’s choice with approval by the faculty.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Design 5 goals to be accomplished during the internship experience and identify measurable outcomes that are supported by the job supervisor, the student, and the teaching faculty.
  2. Complete 90 hours of documented work in a design establishment
  3. Participate in, and contribute to, all class and team discussions and in-class work critiques
  4. Create a professional resume appropriate to the interior design professional
  5. Have portfolio reviewed for content and organization
