Course Description

Offers a capstone experience to prepare for transition to the field of interior design. Requires the development of an individual self-led design project. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

On completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Communicate effectively with clients and professionals, both visually and verbally, utilizingdiagrams, drawings, presentation materials, andclient interviews and presentations.
  2. Develop design solutions that show competency in applying the elements and principles of design,color and pattern coordination, and appropriate use of materials and surfaces;
  3. Create accurate architectural drawings including as-built drawings and remodel plans, elevations, and perspectives;
  4. Develop design solutions that demonstrate an understanding of space planning concepts, and universal design where applicable.

Course Activities and Design

This course will be presented by means of lecture, discussion, demonstrations, and student fieldwork. The student’s grade will be determined by demonstrated competency in project completion, teammate evaluations, and participation in all class activities.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Complete a design project that demonstrates the ability to create:
    1. a full set of design schematics in response to the needs of a real client including architecturally accurate drawings, and professional presentation boards of materials and surfaces; and 
    2. a notebook summary of all materials to be presented to the client and faculty.
       

        2.  Demonstrate communication skills by conducting a client interview, creating a design solution in response to client needs, and                   presenting the design solution for feedback from the client during midterm and end-of-term design reviews.
        3.  Demonstrate teamwork skills by participating on a design team, and being evaluated by classmates and faculty on ability to work                  effectively in groups.
        4.  Demonstrate the ability to utilize effective time management and organizational strategies to bring project to completion and meet               goals.

The student will develop the following skills through this course:
 

  • Conduct a client interview
  • Expand experiences on developing creative, well designed interior design solutions 
  • Communicate visually and verbally in informal and formal presentations before clients, faculty, and outside design reviewers 
  • Develop negotiation, consensus building communication skills to create a successful teamwork environment 
  • Expand drawing skills by learning to draw a one point perspective 
  • Explore additional methods for creating and presenting project boards
