Course Description

Introduces the comprehensive process of custom furniture design, from conception (up) to construction.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Incorporate knowledge of sustainability for furniture sourcing.
  2. Design furniture based on physical ergonomics.
  3. Evaluate quality of case goods, furnishings and upholstery.
  4. Calculate costs of custom furniture.

Aspirational Goals

Understanding the value of furniture in the design process will help to increase the students bottom line and to create a complete interior design product.

Course Activities and Design

This course will include:

  • Field Trips to custom furniture facilities, upholstery shops and vintage furniture stores
  • In class design small group projects evaluating human scale and ergonomics
  • Collaborative groups implementing critical thinking
  • Working with makerspace to create models of student's design
  • Lectures and guest lecturers
  • Presentation of case studies and exemplar works

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Assessment will be through presentation skills, rubrics evaluating understanding of human scale, ergonomics, materials selection and construction techniques

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Concept:  through understanding of human scale, ergonomics, material selection and construction techniques, students will design and build a model of a custom chair.
