Course Description

Covers interior design practices and professional topics. Responds to evolving industry goals.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: 

  1. Identify appropriate industry-specific solutions when responding to design challenges. 
  2. Present design solutions with research and data-driven information and techniques.
  3. Create holistic design presentations that respond supportively to client and consumer needs.

Aspirational Goals

This course aims to encourage students of interior design to seek answers and solutions to the social impact of the practice of interior design.

Course Activities and Design

1. Discussion Groups

2. Sustainable materials studies utilizing the most current methodology of 3rd party evaluators.

3. Environmental impact studies of the interior design profession.

COURSE CONTENT:

Skills:

The student will develop the following skills through this course:

  • Understand what makes a product environmentally responsible
  • Evaluate marketing strategies as to purpose and truthfulness in identifying 'green wash' products from environmentally responsible ones
  • Develop critical thinking skills in selecting and applying environmentally responsible products to appropriate interior application

The following Themes, Issues, and Concepts will have increased meaning to the student as a result of this course:

  • Environmental impact of manufacturing, distribution, installation and salvage of architectural and interior materials
  • Applicable use of third party certification

  • 'Green wash' versus environmentally responsible products

Criteria for selecting and specifying materials includes a "human factor" meaning how much impact the creation of certain materials has on various cultures.
