Course Description

Introduces the concept of health information management and health informatics including the components of content, use the structure of healthcare data along with information keeping practices in both paper and electronic systems. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  1. Perform administrative duties in health care facilities including retrieval and filing of records, document imaging, faxing, and e-mail.
  2. Analyze and provide solutions for various problems in administrative functions using knowledge of administrative office management.
  3. Manage the accessibility of stored data and flow of information.
  4. Develop inter-relationships with other disciplines and functions.
  5. Perform knowledge base/library research.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion, students should be able to:

  1. Use an understanding of the history, currentpractices, ethics, and the mission of the health information and health informatics professions to make effective on the job professional decisions.
  2. Utilize audit review tools to evaluate and analyze healthcare information in paper and electronic formats for validity, reliability, quality, timeliness, comprehensiveness, and currency.
  3. Evaluate differences in acute care record forms from point of patient registration through discharge.
  4. Apply methods of proper correction and editing of medical records errors in paper and electronic formats to meet regulatory standards.
  5. Adapt standard methods of maintaining records in health information management departments utilizing various filing and numbering systems.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will demonstrate these learning outcomes by these tasks conducted individually and in cooperation with other students:

  1. Answer theoretical and application questions on information covered in the lecture, graded assignments and reading assignments.
  2. Show competence in completing library and database research on an assigned health care topic.
