Course Description

Explores and analyzes stress and its relationship to human health. Examines how stress is impacted by individual, interpersonal, community, and societal factors. Evaluates evidence-based stress-management techniques and strategies. Recommended: WR 121. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of stress.
  2. Identify how the social determinants of health impact stress.
  3. Explore how stress is affected by the different levels of the Socioecological model.
  4. Describe the physiological stress response and how it impacts human health.
  5. Evaluates stress management techniques and strategies from various cultural and scientific perspectives.

At the beginning of the course, the instructor will detail the methods used to evaluate student progress and the criteria for assigning a course grade.

Assessment methods may include the following:  

  1. Written examinations
  2. Written assignments
  3. Critical analysis of material
  4. Course activities and discussion
  5. Presentations and/or projects
  6. Participation in class activities

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  1. Explore current research in stress psychophysiology.
  2. Understand the relationship between stress, health, and well-being.
  3. Compare and contrast the effects of acute and chronic stress on the human body.
  4. Discuss unique stressors experienced by different communities.
  5. Surveys methods to manage stress.
