Course Description
Examines human, cultural, and environmental geography placed in context with current issues of social, economic, and political globalization. Includes information on global spatial patterns of agriculture; industrial, post-industrial, and sustainable development; rural-to-urban migration; religious, political and resource conflicts; and cultural landscapes. Uses regional examples to illustrate geographic concepts. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon successful completion students will be able to:
- Use knowledge of global issues to be a moreinformed consumer.
- Link changes in the local and national economy to the growth and changes in emerging economies around the globe.
- Critique various economic and political systems with regards to government influence in commerce, environmental impact, and social welfare of workers.
- Engage in informed discussion and debate over current global political, social, and economic events.
Social Inquiry and Analysis
Students completing an associate degree at Portland Community College will be able to apply methods of inquiry and analysis to examine social contexts and the diversity of human thought and experience.

- Characteristics of developed and developing regions
- Environmental, population and economic factors which impact development
- United Kingdom and Mexico case studies of developed and developing regions
Competencies and Skills:
- Demonstrate how culture and experiences influence peoples' perception of places and regions.
- Demonstrate how human actions modify the physical environment.
- Identify the characteristics that distinguish developed and developing countries.
- Analyze the factors that impact economic development.
- Identify the impact of technology on the physical environment.
- Analyze the physical and cultural characteristics which distinguish the United Kingdom from Mexico.
- Identify the characteristics of cities in developing countries and compare them to those of cities in developed countries in terms of site, situation, functions and internal structure.
