Course Description

Presents the professionally accepted production processes, procedures, and materials used to reproduce graphic communications for distribution. Required: second year standing in the Graphic Design program.

Addendum to Course Description

Preparing Files for Print uses lecture and demonstration methods of instruction to provide the student with the information necessary to complete the course goals and objectives. Field trips and guest speakers may be used to supplement classroom instruction. Regular attendance and completion of assigned reading are essential to the successful completion of this course.

Intended Outcomes for the course


Students should be able to:

  • Use professional terminology to effectively communicate with printing representatives 
  • Make informed decisions based on industry required methods and procedures 

Outcome Assessment Strategies


Students will be evaluated by various methods which may include one or more of the following tools: examinations, homework or other paper assignments and group problem solving.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

At the completion of this course students should be able to:

  • Use the vocabulary and terms of Commercial Printers and Service Bureaus
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the process AFTER the design phrase
  • Build design elements and organize computer files for maximum results on the press
  • Discuss the business relationship of a Graphic Designer, and
  • Commercial Printer and Service Bureau
  • Prepare computer files accurately for output at a Service Bureau
  • Prepare printing specifications for estimation by a printer
  • Define the designer's financial responsibilities in the printing and pre-press process
