Course Description

The first of four levels of English as a second language. Students develop basic English communication. Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening skills are taught in the context of communicating in adult life roles as family and community members, workers, citizens and lifelong learners. A language placement test is required for enrollment.

Intended Outcomes for the course


Upon completing ESL A è Integrated Skills students will be able to use the English language to communicate as related to roles as family members, community members, workers, lifelong learners, and citizens. They will be able to use the English language to communicate basic needs to do the following:
 
·         Convey personal information orally and in writing
·         Complete simple forms
·         Use a limited number of expressions and phrases to ask and answer basic questions and make simple statements in role contexts (orally and in writing)
·         Give and follow simple oral and written directions
·         Ask for clarification
·         Recognize and use letters, numbers, and common sight words
·         Read simple printed information and common signs and symbols

Course Activities and Design



Overview of Practiced Skills:
Oral Communication
 
·         Speak words, phrases, and sentences to be understood, using basic grammar in context. ("Be", simple present, simple past, present continuous, yes/no questions and Wh-words, adjectives, plural nouns)
·         Describe time and location of familiar objects
·         Exchange information in groups
·         Dictate numbers and letters to others
·         Give and follow simple oral instructions
·         Spell words dictated by another
·         Ask and answer questions based on models yes/no questions and Wh- questions
·         Count and make change
·         Ask for clarification
Reading
 
·         Recognize and respond correctly to common sight words
·         Recognize words from personal information forms
·         Recognize various written formats (ads, narratives, forms)
·         Reading strategies (skim, scan, context, prediction)
·         Read simplified maps
·         Recognize common signs and symbols
·         Read simple sentences
Written Communication
 
·         Write sight words, simple sentences and phrases using basic grammar in context. ("Be", simple present, yes/no and Wh- questions)
·         Write basic personal information in correct location on simple forms
·         Write individual numbers in numeric form
·         Write individual letters
·         Alphabetize
·         Write numbers in context
·         Use punctuation (period, question mark, and apostrophes for contractions)
Technology
Use mouse, keyboard, scroll, click, double click

Outcome Assessment Strategies


Performance tasks used at this level may include:
 
·         Transfer written personal information from one form to another (ID card to an application form or address onto an envelope)
·         Complete a written application supplying basic personal information
·         Give and carry out basic oral and written commands (such as the following: open the door, go to a computer and use x to do y, etc.)
·         Use phrases and ask questions to express lack of understanding
·         Describe the location of items in a picture or drawing
·         Interview another classmate asking personal information questions and record information on a form
·         Interview classmates using simple y/n and Wh- questions (in context) and write that information (stories, descriptions, etc.) using complete sentences
·         Scan a simple advertisement, telephone book entry, etc. for numeric information contained in the text; respond accurately to written or oral questions using the text
Progress assessment measured by standardized tests such as CASAS or other state approved standardized measure.
