Course Description

Covers instrumentation, control, and protection of the prime mover and generator. Encompasses the operation of circuit breakers, relays, controllers, gauges, sensors, and switch gear.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to: 

  • Describe basic engine and generator protection systems. 
  • Navigate various original equipment manufacturer (OEM) controls to find specific information regarding the generator's settings.
  • Test basic engine shutdown devices.
  • Read, test, and adjust gauges.
  • Interpret electrical schematics as they relate to instruments, controls, and protection devices.
  • Retrofit outdated analog controls with new digital controls.

Course Activities and Design

This is an outcome based course utilizing a lecture/lab format. This course includes videos, assignments, demonstrations, lectures, and hands on learning.  This course will be taught using industry electric power generation equipment and curriculum.

learn how to retrofit an analog generator with digital controls
