Course Description

Covers the construction, operation, and repair of generators, alternators, and motors. Covers utilization of different resources for finding service literature and specifications on prime movers and alternators. Includes alternator voltage regulator operation and adjustment.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Identify all components related to generators, alternators, and motors.
  • Distinguish unique operating characteristics of generators, alternators, and motors.
  • Explain different winding construction, configuration, and applications. 
  • Describe single-phase and three-phase alternator construction.
  • Configure three-phase stator windings and explain their applications.
  • Explain how voltage regulation is accomplished.

Course Activities and Design

This is an outcome based course utilizing a lecture/lab format. This course includes videos, assignments, demonstrations, lectures, and hands on learning.  This course will be taught using industry electric power generation equipment and curriculum.
