The student will:

Course outcomes and objectives are met in a variety of clinical facilities for this course. Areas not completed in EMT 223-Clinical Internship I will be completed during this course. Departments will include: Emergency; CICU; ICU; Anesthesia ; Labor and Delivery; PANDA/Peds ; Poison Control Center; Burn Center; Psychosocial; Respiratory Therapy; On campus activities will include lectures, lab skills, course review and employment acquisition skills.

Students will be graded on a Pass/No Pass basis. Clinical preceptors will assess each student on an assessment form designed for the specific clinical area reflecting the skills and abilities required of paramedic interns.

During the course the student may be presented with the following:

1.elicit histories and perform physical examinations (including obstetrical history, locate fetal heart sounds, accurately time contractions)
2.perform venipuncture
3.perform endotracheal intubation
4.clear a patient’s airway
5.maintain and clear the patient’s airway
6.appropriately use airway adjuncts, oxygen, BVM
7.utilize sterile technique
8.prepare and administer medications (IM, IV, topical, oral, subcutaneous, and nebulized)
9.interpret EKG’s
10.utilize universal body substance precautions
11.perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation
12.become familiar with laboratory test results and relate them to the patient’s condition and expected treatment
13.observe various levels of consciousness and the correlation of vital signs and neurological signs with changes in LOC (levels of consciousness)
14.complete a medical record in an accurate, legible, and organized manner
15.insert a urinary catheter using sterile/aseptic technique
16.insert a nasogastric tube
17.accurately obtain, assess and document patient’s vital signs
18.observe the assessment and follow up of patients during trauma rounds
19.familiarize themselves with the application of mechanical ventilation
20.prepare and administer IV solutions and/or parenteral medications
21.assess orthopedic injuries and select the appropriate method for immobilizing the injured extremity
22.recognize different types of wounds and select the appropriate management (burns, lacerations/abrasion)
23.observe signs and symptoms of the different stages of labor
24.observe the technique of assisting the mother in a normal delivery
25.observe the difficulties encountered in a difficult delivery
26.observe and assess the newborn with regards to vital signs, need for resuscitative efforts, and maintenance of a neutral thermal environment
