Course Description

Covers the skills needed to perform CPR and operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Includes citizen-level first aid for providing initial care to individuals who are injured or suddenly become ill when help is not immediately available. Also addresses methods for minimizing the transmission of communicable diseases while providing emergency care.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Recognize and apply appropriate basic first aid in cases of sudden illness and emergency situations in the home, work, or community environment for an infant, child, or adult patient.

  2. Apply CPR and AED skills for adult, child, and infant patients in both healthcare teams and community or home settings.

  3. Qualify for American Heart Association (AHA) certification in BLS CPR,  first aid, and bloodborne pathogens.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

The following concepts will be introduced:

  1. Apply the principles in the Chain of Survival

  2. Demonstrate the proper assessment of an acutely ill or injured person

  3. Recognize and provide care for various types of respiratory emergencies & choking

  4. Provide appropriate care for shock and cardiac arrest

  5. Know general care for wounds and demonstrate care skills

  6. Understand how to provide care for burn emergencies

  7. Understand how to provide care for heat and cold emergencies

  8. Understand how to provide care for sudden illness situations

  9. Understand how to provide care for bone and joint injuries

  10. Understand the appropriate use of AED technology

  11. Understand how to provide care for cardiac emergencies

  12. Differentiate cardiac care scenarios and determine the best care plan

  13. Demonstrate how to perform effective rescue breathing

  14. Demonstrate professional CPR skills

  15. Understand safety and risk related to exposure to bloodborne pathogens

  16. Know what actions to take when exposed to blood or blood-containing materials

17. Know what and how to report any exposure to blood or blood-containing materials
