Course Description
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

Recognize and apply appropriate basic first aid in cases of sudden illness and emergency situations in the home, work, or community environment for an infant, child, or adult patient.

Apply CPR and AED skills for adult, child, and infant patients in both healthcare teams and community or home settings.
-
Qualify for American Heart Association (AHA) certification in BLS CPR, first aid, and bloodborne pathogens.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
The following concepts will be introduced:

Apply the principles in the Chain of Survival

Demonstrate the proper assessment of an acutely ill or injured person

Recognize and provide care for various types of respiratory emergencies & choking

Provide appropriate care for shock and cardiac arrest

Know general care for wounds and demonstrate care skills

Understand how to provide care for burn emergencies

Understand how to provide care for heat and cold emergencies

Understand how to provide care for sudden illness situations

Understand how to provide care for bone and joint injuries

Understand the appropriate use of AED technology
