Course Description
Instructs the electrical professional where and how to find required information in the NEC book, demonstrating how the various articles work together to provide complete information on a subject. Most code articles (90 through 450) will be explained in detail. This class can be used towards Continuing Education Units for Oregon State electrical licensing purposes. ELT 230 and APR 230 cannot both be taken for credit. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
This course prepares working electricians for the Oregon Electricians Licensing examination. This course covers NEC updates and code changes for the current year's code cycle. The current year's electrical code book is a major focus of class discussion.
Intended Outcomes for the course
REQUIRED STUDENT OUTCOMES:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the National Electrical Code and it's relationship to Oregon requirements.
- Demonstrate a working familiarity with the intricacies of grounded as well as grounding conductors.
- Demonstrate a working familiarity with the 80/20 rule as it is applied to wiring design.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the requirements for electrical installations in terms of equipment, conditions and proper procedure.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the requirements for acceptable grounding methods utilizing various types of pipe.
- Demonstrate familiarity with NFPA sections to code 511 to 88 A-B, and all underwriters books.
- Demonstrate an understanding of transformers as required for specific industrial needs.
- Demonstrate knowledge of motor types and their requirements in industrial usage.
- Demonstrate knowledge of common services and familiarity with trade vernacular.
Course Activities and Design
Classes will be presented in a lecture/discussion format.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Attendance, participation, and written examination and quizzes. Procedures will be supplied at the first class session. The instructor's specific grading policy will accompany class handouts.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
- Apply the National Electrical Code and Oregon code requirements on the job.
- Install safety grounding and bonding systems per NEC code and code changes.
- Apply the 80/20 rule as it is applied to wiring design in the work place.
- Install electrical equipment using current NEC code changes.
- Apply acceptable grounding methods utilizing various types of conduit and raceways on the job.
- Apply the NFPA sections to code 511 to 88 A-B on the job.
- Install electrical motors and transformers per NEC and code changes.
- Apply the current year's code updates and code changes on the job.
