Course Description

Introduces advanced skills necessary to work with children birth - 5 in a community field placement setting. Includes developmental theory, developmentally and culturally appropriate practices, and individualized methods to support guidance and conflict resolution. Covers the evaluation of environments and curriculum, building family and community relationships, and professionalism. Department permission. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of course, students should be able to:

  1. Use partnerships with families and with professional colleagues to build effective learning environments and assessments for young children.
  2. Use effective caregiving strategies and tools to support the development and learning of young children, including appropriate uses of technology.
  3. Support curriculum development for young children in the application of content knowledge and available resources in a variety of academic disciplines (language and literacy; the arts – music, creative movement, dance, drama, visual arts; mathematics; science, physical activity,
    physical education, health and safety; and social studies).
  4. Involve oneself with the early childhood field in order to facilitate the development of community partnerships.
