Course Description
Covers the broad-based nature of Early Education and Family Studies. Includes boundaries of the field, career options and requirements, and opportunities for life-long learning and advancement. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
This course is designed to enhance the knowledge base of our degree-seeking students (who are required to take 6 – 10 credits of elective credit) while also providing an accessible, interesting, and relevant course to students who are seeking to meet their professional development requirements and/or who might have limited experience in the college setting.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon successful completion, students should be able to:
- Identify career options within the field of early education and family studies.
- Examine the professional demands and education and experiential requirements for the various career options.
- Evaluate and compare career options based on the experiences of classmates in service learning placements and on personal characteristics and professional attributes.

Students will…
- Attend and actively participate in class and small group activities.
- Complete written observations and assignments.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
- Early education and family studies as a profession.
- Identification of work and careers in early education and family studies. Opportunities in the Portland vicinity and in the state of Oregon.
- Overview of the history and trends in early education and family studies and the career development system in Oregon.
- Linking personal characteristics and professional attributes to career options in the field.
