Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
Become familiar with possible medical emergencies that might occur in the dental office and the drugs that may be used in the treatment of these emergencies; become familiar with the medications that dental patients might be taking.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Recognize a variety of prescription and non-prescription medications and be familiar with their actions in the human body.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
1. Define basic terminology of pharmacology to enable further study of individual drugs and their mechanisms.
2. Describe the purposes, types and mechanisms of action of the various types of local anesthetics used in dentistry.
3. Explain precautions and contra-indications of a variety of anesthetics.
4. Define anxiety and discuss its implication in dental treatment.
5. Identify two commonly used anti-anxiety agents and describe appropriate use.
6. Describe the uses, administration, limitations and precautions of nitrous oxide sedation in dentistry.
7. Identify and describe the purposes and use of general anesthesia.
8. Identify and describe a variety of analgesic/antpyretic agents and products and discuss the appropriate uses of each.
9. Identify the most common narcotic agents and discuss their mechanism of action, precautions and appropriate and inappropriate use.
10. Define antibiotic and identify a variety of commonly prescribed antibiotic drugs.
11. Discuss the types of antibiotics, mechanism of action, contraindications and uses in dentistry.
12. Discuss medical emergencies that can occur in the dental office and identify appropriate drugs which should be included in the office emergency kit.
13. Explain the role of each member of the dental team in the event of a medical emergency.
