Course Description

Covers ethical standards established by the dental professions and legal responsibilities of the dental assistant and the dentist as established by the Oregon Dental Practice Act. The legal responsibilities and obligations of the dental assistant and the dentist are also taught.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  1. Practice as a dental assistant applying ethical principles and standards as set forth in the Oregon Dental Practice Act.
  2. Demonstrate how the laws and regulations apply toward his/her professional role.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  1. Describe the general provisions of the Oregon Dental Practice Act.
  2. Explain the licensure provisions of the Practice Act and differentiate between licensure and certification.
  3. Discuss the powers and duties of the Oregon Board of Dentistry.
  4. Describe the activities of the Oregon Board of Dentistry.
  5. Define the scope of practice established for dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants.
  6. Identify the penalties and ramifications of practicing outside the legally defined scope of practice.
  7. Discuss basic ethical theory and relate it to personal and professional life.
  8. Discuss and resolve a variety of ethical dilemmas presented in the form of case studies through class discussions.
