Course Description

Comprehensive course that includes oral and written communication, computer skills and job search techniques. All study is related to dentistry. Recommended: typing/keyboarding skills.

1. Describe and discuss the purpose and advantages of supply inventory and patient recall systems management in dental office settings.

 2. Apply communications skills and knowledge of office management in the cooperative education setting and obtain employment as a dental assistant.

            2. Complete front desk rotation in a practicum setting

            3. Complete group office design project

            4. Produce a cover letter, resume and thank-you letter

            5. Present to group practicum dental office experiences.

Competencies and Skills

1. Discuss situations which arise in the dental office environment which require strong verbal communications skills.

2. Define a variety of terms used to describe personal computers and their function.

3. Complete laboratory exercises and projects in inventory control and recall system management as assigned using a personal computer and assigned software.

4. Research the local job market for dental assistants and explain the steps to follow in an effective job search.

5. Compose a personal resume to be used in the job search.

6. Discuss the factors involved in a job interview and compare effective and ineffective interviews.

7. Discuss the importance of follow-up procedures to the job interview.

8. Demonstrate effective writing skills by composing a professional resume.

Direct instruction in designing a dental office to include floor plan measurement and layout as well as researching equipment purchasing costs and installment.

Utilizing a variety of dental office software, complete dental office scheduling activities.
