Course Description

Fundamental principles of human anatomy and physiology, plus study of tooth form and function. Introduction to dental embryology, microbiology and pathology included.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Use knowledge of basic oral and general anatomy/physiology to assist in the assessment of a patient's general and oral health prior to dental treatment procedures.

Course Activities and Design

  1. Identify structural components of human teeth and use correct terminology to describe them.
  2. Name and explain the characteristics and function of each tooth in the permanent and primary dentitions.
  3. Explain the significance of tooth morphology in the caries process.
  4. Explain the embryological process leading to the formation and eruption of teeth.
  5. Describe a variety of tooth anomalies and explain the probable causative factors.
  6. Describe the structure of the periodontium and explain its relationship to oral health.
  7. Explain the basic classifications of microbes and relate common terms to health and disease.
  8. Identify microbes normally found in a healthy oral cavity.
  9. Show an understanding of the basic disease process and relate characteristics of disease.
  10. Describe a variety of systemic disturbances that manifest in the oral cavity.
  11. Explain the concepts and procedures used in preventing disease transmission in the dental environment.
  12. Describe, at an introductory level, the immune process and identify examples of medical problems related to immune system function or dysfunction.
  13. Describe the structure and components of a living cell and relate variations of cell development to basic body tissues.
  14. List the basic histological features of human skin.
  15. Identify characteristics of healthy bone and describe the relationship of muscles to bone.
  16. Describe the basic function and structure of the nervous system.
  17. Describe the basic function and structure of the cardiovascular system.
  18. Relate components of blood to body function.
  19. Describe the basic function and structure of the respiratory system.
  20. Describe the basic function and structure of the digestive system.
