Course Description

Advanced x-ray clinical experience to include extra-oral and x-rays for children and edentulous patients. Radiographic experience during private practice internships.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Satisfy the practical examination requirement for certification in Oregon by exposing and processing a FMX on a BOARD patient in a safe and effective manner.

  • Safely expose and process patient films in a PCC clinical setting.

  • Expose and process a variety of diagnostic dental radiographs in the workplace setting efficiently and safely.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be evaluated on their performance in their internship sites on the radiography skills, knowledge and professionalism expected of a dental assistant. Attendance will also be considered as part the grade.

COMPETENCIES:

  1. Place, expose, process and mount dental radiographs with increasing proficiency and efficiency on both manikins and patients.

  2. Monitor and maintain the processing facility/equipment in an orderly manner.

  3. Demonstrate consistent application of the principles of safety.

  4. Demonstrate courtesy and comply with ethical, legal and professional standards when working with patients in both the campus clinical lab and at the internship site.

  5. Expose and process radiographs on patients seeking treatment at the internship site as directed and under supervision of the sponsoring dentist.

  6. Evaluate film quality.

  7. Research new techniques within the field of Radiology and write a research paper.

Activities:

Expose films in order to determine the circumference of the x-ray beam. Expose films in order to determine the distance of the x-ray beam. Expose films in order to determine the kVp and mA's. Expose films to determine developing and exposing errors.

Activities:

Practice student –to- student film placement and more advanced radiograph exposure for patients utilizing patient management techniques for the radiographic patient introduced in DA 121. Utilize peer evaluation concepts introduced in DA 121.

Utilize team building concepts introduced in DA 111 while performing more advanced radiographic techniques.

Utilize peer evaluation concepts introduced in DA 121.
