Course Description

Covers the essential elements and implementation of infection control and occupational safety in a dental healthcare setting. Requirement: Admission to the Dental Assisting Program.

Addendum to Course Description

Includes microbiology, infection control, occupational safety, disease transmission, standard/universal precautions, personal protection, sterilization and disinfection principles, instrument processing, CDC guidelines, OSHA bloodborne pathogen standard, hazard communication, dental unit water lines, and medical waste disposal.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify viral and bacterial diseases and follow proper infection control practices for dental personnel and the dental patient.

  2. Recognize modes of disease transmission and the steps necessary to break the chain of infection.

  3. Differentiate between disinfection and sterilization and when each technique is utilized in the dental office.

  4. Identify the roles of the CDC’s Infection Control Guidelines and OSHA’s Occupational Exposure to Blood-borne Pathogen Standard and the their impact in an oral healthcare setting.

  5. Explain waste management in the dental office and follow proper procedures in handling and disposal of multiple types of dental waste.
