Course Description

Covers advanced clinical training and practical experience in clinical dental assisting duties and responsibilities. Continues exploration and application of dental specialties. Includes chairside dental assisting procedures in both the PCC Dental Clinic and in a dental office externship.

Addendum to Course Description

Clinical emphasis in pediatric dentistry, removable prosthodontic cleaning and home care instructions, delivery of bleaching trays, and fabrication of a provisional crown chairside. The externship will enable students to work in a clinic applying the principles and practices learned in the classroom. 

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Perform, at an advanced level (employment entry), dental assisting chairside duties while utilizing safe methods and demonstrating professionalism.
  2. Follow the procedural steps and identify armamentarium.
  3. Follow post-operative instructions for various dental procedures and specialty treatments.
  4. Follow the procedural steps and recognize armamentarium and instrumentation needed for temporary crown fabrication chairside.

  • Document exam findings, health history updates, vital signs, and services rendered 
  • Educate patients regarding removable appliance home care instructions 
  • Perform four-handed procedures with increased efficiency
  • Seat a stainless steel crown 
  • Fabricate a provisional crown chairside
