Course Description

Introduces structural detail drafting of engineering design drawings and shop fabrication drawings for steel construction. Covers steel grades and shapes; and design, fabrication, and erection drawings for steel structures. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify and describe structural steel shapes and use detailing information shown in the American Institute of Steel Construction steel section tables.
  2. Create and interpret structural steel working drawings that involve plan views and elevation views, using CAD software.
  3. Create and interpret detail drawings that involve bolted connections, using CAD software.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Assessment and grading criteria will be discussed during the first class meeting. Individual and classroom discussion, completed assignments, attendance and classroom participation, exams, quizzes and worksheets may be used to assess outcomes.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Themes, Concepts, and Issues:

  1. Standardization of drawing organization, views, and formats is essential.
  2. Clear and unambiguous communication is always the goal.

Content:

  1. Structural steel shapes and sizes
  2. Plan view drawings: foundation, floors, and roof
  3. Elevation and wall section drawings
  4. Details and sections
  5. Grid systems for building layout
  6. Erection drawings
  7. AISC dimensioning standards including Bills of Materials
  8. Fabrication detail drawings of steel members
  9. Bolted connections including standard structural fasteners

Competencies and Skills:
The student will be able to:

1.  Interpret and create design drawings for a steel fabricated structure.

a.      Plan Drawings

i.   Identify and draw single line views of floor support members.
ii.  Identify and designate support members

b.      Elevation Drawings

i.   Identify and use dimensional formats for elevations of ground level, base, floor heights, etc.
ii.  Identify and create drawings that incorporate selection of views, specifications of members,
    building materials and building requirements.
iii. Identify and create base plate details, including anchor bolt size and placement.

2.  Interpret and create detail drawings using AISC structural steel drafting practices.

a.      Rolled and extruded structural shapes.

i.  Identify and explain forms and dimensions of rolled structural shapes.
ii. Identify and use steel connection standards for bolted connections.
iii. Identify and use fastener standard placement requirements per AISC standards.

b.      Detail drawings.

i.  Identify and demonstrate the AISC standard of dimensioning structural steel detail drawings.
ii.  Identify and demonstrate AISC standards of marking for fabrication and shipping of structural
steel members including bills of material/cutting lists.

c.      Erection Drawings

i.   Identify and draw building grid plan including column locations.
ii.  Identify and draw single line views of floor support members
iii. Calculate field bolt list and apply to erection drawings.
iv. Add field weld symbols where needed.
