Course Description

Covers kinematics and kinetics principles relating to the motion of particles and rigid bodies. Examines force, mass, acceleration and velocity relationships. Includes practical linear and curvilinear motion problem solving. Covers work-energy and impulse-momentum methods. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Analyze forces on rigid bodies in motion.

• Solve applied kinematics problems in two dimensions and three dimensions.

• Communicate analysis and results clearly: orally, in writing, and through diagrams and calculations.

Course Activities and Design

Emphasis is on problem-solving using the three basic tools of mechanics,
namely:

  1. Force systems
  2. Work-energy
  3. Impulse-momentum

Principles and techniques are presented through lectures and demonstrations during class hours. Students develop problem-solving skills during working sessions under the instructor's guidance. Problems are assigned on a weekly basis for home practice. A thorough, well-written textbook is used. Practical applications are made throughout the course through use of typical engineering design problems.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Student progress is measured by performance on objective examinations covering appropriate types of problems. Grades are determined on the basis of examinations and homework. Details are provided by the instructor at the initial class meeting.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
