Course Description

Provides basic concepts of data communications, networking and connectivity. Explores hardware, connectivity, signaling, addressing, network topologies, communication protocols, network designs, switching, management, TCP/IP protocols, security and standards with emphasis on the OSI reference model. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

On successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  • Successfully participate in higher level Data Communication and Networking classes
  • Troubleshoot simple Data Communication problems
  • Design moderately complex networks using appropriate network architectures and hardware

Course Activities and Design

This course is presented by means of:

  • on-campus lectures or distance learning lessons
  • on-line discussions,
  • individual lab assignments
  • group lab assignments.

Students will be required to use essential tools to complete the lab assignments.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Communicate effectively with networking professionals.
  • Select appropriate data communications solutions to business problems and needs.
  • Explain the process of data communication.
  • Prepare elementary internetworking designs, including cost evaluations.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  • Communicate effectively
    • Participate in discussions with the instructor and other students.
    • Prepare a research report using professional literature and/or interviewing networking professionals.
  • Select Appropriate Solutions
    • In oral and written work, when given a business problem, provide appropriate networking and data communications.
  • Prepare Internetworking Designs
    • Prepare logical and physical network drawings for fairly simple networks, specifying network and link types, plus costs.
  • Explain Processes
    • Use proper data communication vocabulary to explain how data communication processes work.
  • Concepts Include:
    • Network topologies, media, access methods, architectures, connectivity devices, communication protocols, wide area network communication types, security, management, signaling, and telecommunication concepts.
