Course Description

Continues the work of Chinese 202. Expands vocabulary and structure for the purpose of active communication. Emphasizes effective communicative skills in written and spoken language. Includes listening, speaking, reading, writing, culture, pronunciation, and Chinese characters (hanzi). Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: 

  1. Read and understand the main topic and flow of events in straightforward paragraph-length texts written in Chinese.
  2. Write a few short paragraphs, often across various time frames about familiar topics and situations.
  3. Speak about a variety of familiar topics and situations using a series of connected sentences and a number of follow-up questions.
  4. Listen and understand the main idea and flow of events in conversations and short discussions in Chinese.
  5. Identify, describe, and discuss some differences between one’s own cultures and Chinese cultural products, practices, and perspectives.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Active participation in class

  • Individual or group presentations

  • Contextual written tasks to assess reading, writing, cultural, and  listening competencies. 

  • Quizzes on pinyin and Chinese characters (hanzi).

  • Oral interviews with partner or instructor

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  • Expressing agreement and dissent politely in a school setting. 

  • Sharing where one was born and grew up.

  • Describing and commenting on living a community such as a dorm

  • Sharing opinions about tastes and dietary restrictions 

  • Introduction to regional Chinese cuisines

  • Discussion preferences and criteria of shopping for basic household items and discounts. 

  • More extensive sentence structures, including comparison, reaffirmation, continuation of an action.
