Course Description

Continues the work of Chinese 201. Expands vocabulary and structure for the purpose of active communication. Emphasizes effective communicative skills in written and spoken language. Includes listening, speaking, reading, writing, culture, pronunciation, and Chinese characters (hanzi). Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Read and understand the main idea and key information in short texts written in Chinese.
  2. Write a series of connected sentences and short paragraphs about familiar topics and everyday situations.
  3. Speak about familiar topics and everyday situations using connected sentences and a limited number of follow-up questions.
  4. Listen and identify the main idea and key information in short talks and conversations in Chinese.
  5. Identify and describe some differences between one’s own cultures and Chinese cultural products and practices.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Active participation in class

  • Individual or group presentations

  • Contextual written tasks to assess reading, writing, cultural, and  listening competencies. 

  • Quizzes on pinyin and Chinese characters (hanzi).

  • Oral interviews with partner or instructor

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  • Describing a place to live and situation, including rooms, furniture, roommates, rent, and other costs. 

  • Naming and discussing sports, exercise activities, and routines. 

  • Discussing and describing travel experiences and itinerary, including planning, booking, and greeting at the airport, restaurants, and hotels. 

  • Expanding sentence patterns using the ba construction and the passive construction to focus on what action being done to an object
