Course Description

Continues the work of first year Chinese. Reviews and expands vocabulary and structure for the purpose of active communication. Emphasizes effective communicative skills in written and spoken language. Includes listening, speaking, reading, writing, culture, pronunciation, and Chinese characters (hanzi). Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Read and identify the topic and related information from simple texts written in Chinese.
  2. Write sentences and some connected sentences about familiar topics and situations.
  3. Speak about familiar topics and everyday situations using simple sentences and appropriate follow-up questions.
  4. Listen and identify the topic and related information from short talks and conversations in Chinese.
  5. Identify some differences between one's own cultures and Chinese cultural products and practices.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Active participation in class

  • Individual or group presentations

  • Contextual written tasks to assess reading, writing, cultural, and  listening competencies. 

  • Quizzes on pinyin and Chinese characters (hanzi).

  • Oral interviews with partner or instructor

  • Directions to go somewhere, identifying location and relative position of a place, states and cities, distance.

  • Hosting a gathering, suggesting time, gifts, things to bring, and relevant personal details. 

  • Describing time duration

  • Seeing a doctor, describing symptoms, and taking instruction

  • Dating, describing how people meet with detailed information of who, where, when, how, and what, and asking someone out
