Course Description

Continues the work of Chinese 102. Introduces further Chinese language, and culture. Emphasizes effective communicative skills in written and spoken Chinese. Includes listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, Chinese characters (hanzi) and grammar. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Read and understand the general topic, questions and statements in short writings in Chinese.
  2. Write mostly simple sentences about familiar and everyday topics.
  3. Speak about familiar and everyday topics using simple sentences.
  4. Listen and identify the topic and some isolated elements from simple sentences in spoken Chinese.
  5. Recognize, describe and explain some cultural perspectives related to some basic everyday Chinese cultural products and practices.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Active participation in class

  • Individual or group presentations

  • Contextual written tasks to assess reading, writing, cultural, and  listening competencies. 

  • Quizzes on pinyin and Chinese characters (hanzi).

  • Oral interviews with partner or instructor

  • Shopping, describing price, color, size, items and payment methods

  • Ordering food, expressing special requests and preferences. 

  • Discuss climate, weather and seasons

  • Transportation, describing sequencing of transit modes and transfer, requesting a ride or giving a ride.
