Course Description

Covers the foundations of the ancient health system of Ayurveda (Indian medicine). Discover how to balance the mind, body and spirit through both Yoga and Ayurveda. Explore Ayurvedic anatomy and systems: the five elements (Panchamahabhutas), three bio-energies (Doshas), anatomy and body tissues (Dhatus), and universal qualities (Gunas). Discover how the sister sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda overlap. This course is offered during the Fall terms.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
Define the six philosophical systems that originated in India. Describe how Sankhya philosophy groups the five elements (Panchamahabhutas) and describes epistemology
Identify Ayurvedic anatomy and body tissues (Dhatus) relevant to fall (Vata) season, and universal qualities (Gunas)
Describe Patanjali’s Yoga Ethics with the Yamas and Niyamas
Explain how the sister sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda overlap and at least three ways to apply these practices during the autumn season. Define the tastes that balance Vata.
