Course Description

Introduces the workflow for creating websites, beginning with the creation of web page mockups using industry-standard image editing software, then taking the mockups and producing HTML and CSS web pages that display accurately on any web-supported device. Includes the creation of transparent images, vector graphics, text, and images that display on all devices. Covers web standards for color management, design principles, and usability best practices. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Use industry standard software to create web page mockups, transparent and quality images appropriate for various devices, vector graphics, and text.
  2. Integrate best practices of web color management, design principles, and usability to create web page mockups
  3. Optimize images for various web devices
  4. Use industry-standard image software to export CSS code from a web page mockup to industry-standard and other open source software programs to produce responsive web pages
  5. Use critical thinking skills to troubleshoot technical issues related to the creation of web page mockups

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Projects demonstrating designing web page mockups and creating responsive web pages.
  2. Tests and quizzes

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  1. Learn specific image editing skills:
    1. Use Camera Raw to adjust images non-destructively
    2. Optimize images for the using the appropriate file types
    3. Use raster and vector graphics
    4. Create selections using various selections tools
    5. Produce transparent and quality images appropriate for any device
    6. Create quality vector text, shapes and paths
    7. Integrate web fonts
    8. Manage layers and layer styles
    9. Use and create smart objects
    10. Understand copyright issues related to graphics on the Internet
  2. Create web mockup documents using image editing software and skills
  3. Integrate web standard color management, design principles, user interfaces, and usability
  4. Export CSS from mockup to open source web editor
  5. Import completed .psd files to the web editor, Edge Reflow, to produce web pages that display on any web-supported device
  6. Produce professional images and web pages for portfolio artifacts
