Course Description

Introduces the creation of sophisticated, dynamic, interactive and fully functional websites using Joomla, a Content Management System (CMS). Includes setting up a Joomla website in a remote server environment, working with templates, creating efficient site navigation using menus, organizing a site using components and modules, enhancing a site with plugins and extensions, and creating user functionality with user logins. Recommended: CAS 111D, CAS 206, and CAS 215; placement into RD 115 and WR 115. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of this course, student will be able to:

  1. Use Joomla software to create personal and/or business websites following current professional and/or industry standards.
  2. Use critical thinking skills to design and create dynamic Joomla websites.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Grading of this class will be based on completion of project(s) developed individually or as part of a team. Assessments may include:

  • Completion of a functional multi-page website using Joomla. The site may include some or all of the following:
  • Templates (Existing or user created)
  • Categories & Articles
  • Components, Modules, Extensions, & Plugins
  • Site navigation using Menus
  • User Login
  • Tests or quizzes

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  • Joomla CMS program in a remote hosting environment
  • Installing and modifying existing templates
  • Creating templates using a template creation tool such as Artisteer
  • Managing site content using categories and articles
  • Site navigation using menus
  • Installing and configuring components and modules
  • Installing and configuring extensions, including but not limited to:
  • Calendars
  • Photo/video galleries
  • Introduction to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as it is accomplished in a Joomla website
  • Maintaining site security
  • Other skills as time permits
