Course Description

Covers practical application of industry standard product development process(es) and associated tools.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Design, document and oversee a digital design of a product that meets established requirements.

  2. Apply industry standard tools and methodologies for completing each phase of a product development project.

  3. Work collaboratively to communicate technical information in a team project environment.

  4. Use best practices in human relations to resolve team disagreements.

  5. Provide status updates about projects in a timely manner upon request that align with the correct phase of a design project.

Course Activities and Design

Complete activities and/or assignments, which show an understanding of the product development process.

  • Complete assignments, projects, quizzes and/or class activities requiring teams to collaborate in designing a product that meets predetermined requirements.

  • Use 3D CAD to design, document and analyze a product.  

  • Understand and apply the typical product development phases used in industry

  • For each phase of the project: demonstrate knowledge of associated tools and deliverables where applicable

  • Participate in, and contribute to, class discussions and activities.

  • Complete a term project 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The following must be assessed:

  • Develop a design using CAD that meets requirements.  

  • Identify the attributes of an effective product development team.  

  • Given various team human relation scenarios, determine the best course of action to improve team dynamics and effectiveness.  

  • Describe the status of the product development phase 

  • Complete a design brief or a summary PRD

At least one of the following must be assessed:

  • Test plan document

  • FMEA document

  • Tolerance analysis

  • Assembly drawing

  • Bill of materials 

  • A prototype

At least two of the following grading measures must be used:               

  • Homework

  • Quizzes

  • Projects

  • In-class activities

Hours: 60

  1. Work effectively as a product development team member working collaboratively to communicate technical information in a project environment.

  2. Use human relations techniques to resolve team conflicts.

  • Apply teamwork skills during design projects and reviews.

  • Contribute to a design team project that concludes with a presentation.

  • Schedule, organize, and run team meetings 

  • Anticipate, analyze, and adapt to changing team dynamics and team goals to complete project(s).

  • Demonstrate effective listening skills and an awareness and understanding of cultural differences through research projects and in-class discussions.

  • Team building skills will be included in instructions and readings.
