Course Description

Continues material presented in CADD 160. Introduces geometric construction, fasteners, keys keyseats and keyways, surface finish, and tolerances. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion students should be able to:
1. Competently dimension technical mechanical drawings using ANSI/ASME standards.
2. Apply a thorough understanding of tolerancing practices used to develop fits and limits to
create technical mechanical drawings.
3. Use and understand surface finishing concepts to correctly apply surface finish symbols to
create technical mechanical drawings.
4. Research products on the internet and incorporate them to create technical mechanical
drawings.
5. Apply and use ANSI limits and fits tables and incorporate into technical mechanical drawings.

Course Activities and Design

This course will be presented by means of lecture presentations and coordinated laboratory exercises. Lectures are supplemented with selected reading assignments. Individualized instruction will be provided while the student is working on lab projects. This course utilizes freehand sketching techniques learned in previous drafting classes. The majority of assignments will be completed using the AutoCAD 2-D format.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Evaluation procedures and grading criteria will be discussed during the first class meeting. Individual and classroom discussions, completed assignments, attendance and classroom participation. exams, quizzes, and worksheets may be used to assess outcomes.
 

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

1.0 GEOMETRIC CONSTRUCTION

  1. Identify and draw basic geometric elements.
  2. Understand definitions of terms used in geometric construction.
  3. Use geometric construction techniques to solve problems.

2.0 DIMENSIONING

  1. Dimension drawings using ANSI/ASME Y 1.1-1989 standards.
    1. Accurately measure assigned drawings and produce dimensioned sketches.
    2. Using AutoCAD, create 2-D orthographic mechanical drawings and dimension.
  2. Dimension "Automatic Production Drawings" using ANSI/ASME Y 14.5M-1994 standards.
  3. Apply proper drawing notation to various types of mechanical drawings.

3.0 SURFACE FINISHING

  1. Using charts and tables, determine the surface finish for various parts.
  2. Correctly apply surface finish marks to dimensioned drawing.

4.0 FITS AND LIMITS

  1. Given the allowance and tolerance for various mating parts, calculate their dimensional limits.
  2. Given standard fit information use the American National Standard Fits table to determine tolerance of mating parts.
