Course Description

Introduces skills needed to set-up, operate, and maintain a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), 3D printer machine. Emphasis on using 3D CAD modeling packages to create basic 3D printable designs. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Requires basic computer operational skills literacy.  Students will complete projects to support theory skills, including a term final project.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify parts or components that can be produced on a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printer machine.
  2. Create physical parts from digital CAD models using an FDM machine. Use best practices in development of proper part orientations and input file settings.
  3. Apply basic finishing and processing techniques to the manufactured part.
  4. Gain familiarity with at least one 3D modeling CAD program and implement the process of using CAD for creating a 3D printed part.

Course Activities and Design

The course will be taught through structured training activities and weekly projects to develop competency and will include student proposed project work to reinforce these skills.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be assessed on their ability to setup and operate FDM and CNC router machines to produce acceptable parts that they decide to make in addition to assigned parts.

With students selecting their own projects to do, instructor and student will negotiate both project scope and acceptable completion quality for grading determination.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  1. The ability to identify manufactured projects or products that are compatible for manufacture on FDM machines.
  2. The basic set and operation of an FDM machine using support systems.
  3. Student proposed and completed project work to reinforce these concepts.
