Course Description

Introduces construction industry practices in a domestic and national context. Explores the roles and responsibilities of those involved in construction projects from inception to completion. Introduces the various phases of construction including planning, design, documentation, bidding, permitting, pre-construction, supervision, and close-out. Presents the role of planning, scheduling, project organization, and communication in successful project management. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Participants work in teams to apply principles in making hypothetical business decisions for the team's publicly held construction company or
materials supplier; to gain understanding of that company's operations and competitive position within the industry.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion students should be able to: 

  • Communicate effectively and collaborate on a construction project
  • Recognizing the roles and responsibilities of design professionals, contractors, owners and regulatory agents
  • Distinguishing between the major stages of the construction process
  • Identifying all major building systems and their location on the construction schedule
  • Differentiating between management functions, and explain the primary role each plays in the management of the project

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Work individually to create a business decision-making process for managing a construction company, which applies concepts, principles and strategies presented to achieve intended learning outcomes.
  2. Work individually to study and contribute principles and applications of business, economics or project management to improve the process and function of the team°s construction company.
  3. Complete individually two in-class assessments that apply principles presented to an actual problem of a construction company or materials supplier and recommend management decision. 
  4. Work in teams to hypothetically recommend decisions for a publicly held construction company by applying concepts, principles and strategies presented in a written report and an oral presentation to achieve intended outcomes.

Themes, issues and Concepts

  1. Overview of business management and macro economics topics influence the construction industry.
  2. Global business in the construction industry.
  3. Project management and administration; including job site safety and safety management.
  4. Related professional services; such as, insurance and surety.
  5. Influences in management decisions: financial; economics and socioeconomic forces; environmental laws; labor, legal and political; governmental and regulatory agencies; and competitive and distributive forces.
  6. Management principles of a decentralized work force; human resource management and organizational behavior; employer requirements and workers' rights; management principles of a decentralized work force.


Process Skills

  1. Develop individual skills in research and documentation to substantiate proposals presented to team in making decisions and applying a principle of business, economics or project management to improve the process and function of the team°s publicly held construction company.
  2. Collaborate with team members in making management decisions for competitive positioning of a publicly held construction company; distribute and delegate responsibilities; documentation, research and communication for teamwork between members.
