Course Description

Examines what people think, feel, and do in organizations. Explores individual and group interactions in organizational settings. Focuses on perception, communication, motivation, leadership, and small-group dynamics. Explores how individual behavior, team processes, organizational climate, and global challenges affect organizational change and development. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Credit will be acceptable as required and/or elective for Portland Community College's Business Administration Certificate or Degree Programs.  This course may be transferable to four-year colleges and universities.
 

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: 

  1. Use an understanding of self-esteem development, emotions, perceptions, and motivation to facilitate increased organizational productivity.
  2. Use professional and organizationally appropriate interpersonal communication skills with employees, co-workers and customers to improve organizational effectiveness, and resolve conflicts in a diverse and global workplace.
  3. Identify and describe different types of work teams and apply knowledge of individual and team behaviors to delegate tasks effectively, enhance productivity, and foster positive team relationships in a changing work environment.
  4. Apply principles of effective leadership and diverse leadership styles to build collaborative teams, encourage innovative problem-solving, and strengthen organizational effectiveness.
  5. Analyze and apply models of personal and organizational change, demonstrating effective change management skills to reduce negative impacts on productivity, and support the successful achievement of organizational goals.

Outcome Assessment Strategies


Activities may vary by instructor and may include lectures, discussions, written assignments, and quizzes geared toward critical analysis of course concepts, strategies, and skills. Students are required to complete written or oral assignments, case studies or projects which will provide practical application of human relations principles, designed to integrate course material into personal experience or experiences of others.

  • Describe the elements of and need for interpersonal communication skills

  • Discuss and understand the opportunities and challenges facing organizations in a global and technical environment
  • Discuss the effects of individual transition during organizational change
  • Explain the issues of cultural diversity in the workplace
  • Identify issues of organizational health, ethics and globalization
  • Discuss ways persons can control stress
  • Explain employee discipline and the right to privacy
  • Describe business ethics standards in today's society
  • Identify the areas of organizational social responsibility
  • Identify causes, approaches, and ways to effectively manage interpersonal conflict within the workplace
  • Identify the importance of individual self-concept, self-esteem, attitudes and values, and awareness in a workplace setting
  • Identify and discuss internal and external customer influence on productivity
