Course Description

Offers relevant field experience in business environments in one of the following areas: bookkeeping, marketing, management, international business, advertising, banking, purchasing, investment, finance and customer services (sales or credit services). Allows exploration of career options. Course may be repeated for credit up to 12 credits. Required concurrent, one time only: BA 280B.

Addendum to Course Description

Provides on-the-job application of business skills coordinated with seminar and assignment activities. 
Skills will be developed by assigning student to a selection of tasks in the job setting.  The selection of tasks will be made by
employing supervisor, PCC coordinator/instructor, and student trainee.
  
Relevant field experience is on-the-job business environments, in one of the following areas:  bookkeeping, marketing, advertising, management, international business, banking, purchasing, investment, finance, and customer service (sales or credit services).  This experience allows students to explore career options.
 
  The student is primarily responsible for finding a job.  The job experience can be paid or non-paid position.  The Portland
  Community College job placement Office and the Cooperative Education department may also provide assistance with securing a
  position.
 
  This course may be used as an elective or requirement for certain Associate of Applied Science degrees in the business discipline.
 
  Courses with three digit numbers may be transferable to four-year colleges and universities.  Students should consult with these
  other institutions regarding transfer possibilities.
 
  This is designed to provide a coordinated, supervised transition from course related business training to on-the-job performance.
 
 

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the training, students shall have the ability to:
    
     - Work in the business field.
    
     _ Obtain further training in their selected field.
    
     _ Write learning objectives for their subsequent field
       experience plan.
    
     - Have a better understanding of the skills and demands of
       their chosen field.
    
     - Further explore the career field of their choice.
    
     - Apply the job skills they acquired to help them become more
       employable.
     
    
 

Course Activities and Design

 The following components are incorporated in the activities and design of this  course:
 
  A. Selection of appropriate work site by student (preferably) and
       approved by Portland Community College coordinator/instructor.
       The work site is to meet task performance standards appropriate
       for student task performance growth.
      
  B. Work agreement establishing the duties and responsibilities of
       the student trainee and the employing organization.
         
  C. The training plan developed by the student with guidance from
       the employing supervisor and coordinator/instructor.  Provisions
       will be made to revise the training plan to incorporate
       additional skill levels as initial skills are satisfactorily
       acquired.
         
  D. Evaluations of student on-the-job performance is to be conducted
       according to the following plan:
      
     1.  Student self-evaluation and follow up.
              
     2.  Supervisor evaluation and follow up.
              
     3.  Coordinator/supervisor/student conference(s) reviewing
         the student's self-evaluation and the supervisor's
         evaluation.
           
 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  On-the-job evaluation will be a joint effort on the part of the student and the work supervisor with emphasis on the
  evaluations of the work supervisor.  Credit will be issued as Pass/No Pass rather than as a letter grade.  Evaluation procedures
  will be discussed during the first two weeks of the seminar class.
